The steam reciprocating pump is a water-lifting device powered by steam and operating on the principle of a piston cylinder. It is primarily used for supplying water to small and medium-sized boilers, transporting petroleum products in refineries, and draining mines. The cylinder working pressure for various steam reciprocating pumps is 1.4 MPa, with a discharge pressure of 1.7 MPa. They are suitable for saturated steam and superheated steam, with ambient temperatures not exceeding 200°C. The piston rings supplied with these steam reciprocating pumps are only suitable for water temperatures not exceeding 60°C. For temperatures exceeding this but not exceeding 105°C, the piston rings must be replaced with high-quality canvas-lined packing. The theoretical suction lift for all steam reciprocating pumps is 10.3 meters. However, the actual suction lift, including pipeline resistance, should not exceed 7 meters during operation. When pumping hot water, the suction lift decreases as water temperature increases. If water temperature is excessively high or pipeline resistance is too great, the minimum water level in the intake tank must be higher than the horizontal centerline of the steam pump's cylinder and water tank.

▇ Working Principle
A steam reciprocating pump is a direct-acting reciprocating pump powered by steam, typically designed in a horizontal configuration. The pump operates as follows: steam enters the steam distribution chamber through the inlet pipe, then flows into the cylinder via the inlet port on the left side. Under steam pressure, the cylinder piston moves to the right, while exhaust steam is discharged from the cylinder's right-side exhaust port into the exhaust chamber. As the cylinder piston moves, it drives the pump chamber piston connected to the connecting rod in the same direction. This creates a vacuum in the left pump chamber of the water tank, drawing water through the suction pipe and left inlet valve into the left pump chamber. Simultaneously, the right outlet valve opens to discharge water. When the cylinder piston reaches its rightmost position, the connecting rod's leftward movement closes the left cylinder steam inlet and opens the right inlet, allowing steam to enter. The piston then begins moving leftward again. The pump piston draws water from the right side and discharges it from the left. Through the continuous reciprocating motion of the pump piston with the cylinder piston, water is endlessly drawn in and expelled.
▇ Application
Reciprocating pumps are suitable for conveying liquids with high head, low flow rate, and high viscosity, but are not recommended for transporting corrosive liquids. They are sometimes directly driven by steam engines to convey flammable and explosive liquids.
